Went to the game store the other day, and they didn’t have what I wanted, so I picked this up instead! I didn’t know a ton about it (other than its wonderful Game Over screen), but I knew it was one of the Saturn’s many arcade conversions from a time when SEGA was making good arcade stuff. I figured it was probably no Daytona, but it couldn’t be too bad.
I was right, it’s pretty good! With just two cars and four tracks, it’s a modest offering, but it makes up for it with great handling and a rockin’ soundtrack. Driving just feels great. The tracks in the arcade mode increase in difficulty and complexity, helping ease the player into the action. As an arcade title, this isn’t a game you should expect to cruise through on your first try. It took me a few attempts even on easy. But each time I tried, I found myself getting a little better, my turns and lines a little sharper. Finishing 1st after the main three tracks awards a shot at the bonus track and subsequent credits. Even though it took me a few tries, I’d say it’s unlikely it took me more than an hour of effort overall. This is clearly a game intended for perfectionists and time trial fiends who really want to perfect it. I doubt I’ll get that sort of mileage out of it, but I understand that’s a personal thing.
Pretty good game. Kind of surprised that this doesn’t have any ports I’m aware of. Would be a good downloadable title, especially with improved visuals and a remastered soundtrack. Maybe someday!
